Improving Baltic Sea wave forecasts using modelled surface currents

چکیده
Abstract Currents in the Baltic Sea are generally weak, but during strong winds they can grow high enough to affect surface wave propagation and evolution. To evaluate significance of wave-current interactions Sea, we conducted a study using model WAM, comparing run without currents one with current forcing from NEMO hydrodynamical simulation. The overall changes field caused by were quite small. Changes over 10 cm significant height (SWH) or 1 s peak period ( T p ) occurred only some areas typically less than 3% time. Current refraction changed SWH annual mean up 2 cm, 60 seen maximum values. had occasionally large due shifts energy two-peaked swell wind-sea spectra. Including led stronger compared wind sea energy. A comparison buoy Gulf Finland showed that this change improved accuracy simulation narrow gulf. Current-induced was most prominent near coastal areas, where speed exceeded 0.3 m/s. In general, decreased slightly increased adjacent open areas. effects frequent Finland, Western Gotland Basin Åland Sea.

Sea Surface Wave Information Using GPS Sea Reflected Signal - Wave Height
In case of positioning by GPS, the direct signal from the satellite to the receiver is ordinarily utilized, but the multipath signal is regarded as one error source that 81 ION GNSS 18th International Technical Meeting of the Satellite Division, 13-16 September 2005, Long Beach, CA deteriorate the positioning accuracy. In this paper, we focus on characteristics of the reflected signal, and had ...
متن کاملNear-coastal satellite altimetry: Sea surface height variability in the North Sea – Baltic Sea area
The radiometer wet tropospheric correction is a limiting factor of the application of near-coastal altimetry observations in the North Sea – Baltic Sea area. Using an ECMWF model based correction instead, we increase the return rate from 70% to 95%, with observations as close as 10 km from the coast. The altimetry and 39 coastal tide gauges are referenced to the same state of the art regional g...
متن کاملNeural network forecasts of the tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures
A nonlinear forecast system for the sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the whole tropical Pacific has been developed using a multi-layer perceptron neural network approach, where sea level pressure and SST anomalies were used as predictors to predict the five leading SST principal components at lead times from 3 to 15 months. Relative to the linear regression (LR) models, the nonlinea...
متن کاملImproving Electric Load Forecasts Using Network Committees
Accurate daily peak load forecasts are important for secure and profitable operation of modern power utilities, with deregulation and competition demanding ever-increasing accuracies. Machine learning techniques including neural and abductive networks have been used for this purpose. Network committees have been proposed for improving regression and classification accuracy in many disciplines, ...
متن کاملImproving Penetration Forecasts Using Social Interactions Data
W propose an approach for using individual-level data on social interactions (e.g., number of recommendations received by consumers, number of recommendations given by adopters, number of social ties) to improve the aggregate penetration forecasts made by extant diffusion models. We capture social interactions through an individual-level hazard rate in such a way that the resulting aggregate pe...
